A few months ago we ordered this ice maker. The first ice maker arrived dead on arrival. We were very discouraged as this happens much too often and normally is a hassle returning and getting credit or replacement. We communicated via e-mail with Air & Water, Inc, the vendor, and a new machine was promptly sent with a return label for the non-operative machine.

We have refrained from writing a review determining our sentiments. The verdict is in. We love it. Granted it is noisy, if left unattended the ice melts and recycles into more ice. Big deal! It makes ice - and plenty of it. When first received we bagged the ice to make sure we had plenty. We couldn't keep up and we had ice in every freezer compartment. Eventually, we quit bagging and just used out of the machine. We even pour ice into our non-working refrigerator ice maker. The refrigerator ice maker allows us to have crushed ice. It's the perfect system for us.

When we go camping, we take the ice maker with us. We could even use it on the patio if we ever entertained ;>) .

I was tempted to buy a less expensive hand ice crusher, but then read some of the disasterous reviews of those, and opted instead for this ice crusher based on most of the positive feedback. Knowing that it would not make "shaved ice" before I acquired it has kept my expectations realistic, and it performs exactly as I thought it would, actually better. A friend thought I paid hundreds of dollars for this since it looks very no-nonsense and professional. It crushes the ice into random chunks ranging from pea-sized to marble sized, even though I feed it pretty large cubes from a tray.

I have even frozen diet soda in a tray and fed it through to make flavorful "chewing ice" since I love to chew on ice. You can eat this "soda pop ice" in a cup with a spoon, and it is a lot less caloric than ice cream and satisfies the desire in the summer to eat something ice cold when it is hot outside. However, it is not to be confused with the products you can buy at the convenience store since the chunks of this unit's ice are much larger than those that come out of the "soft serve" units commercially found at convenience stores.

So if you are looking for shaved ice or "soft serve" ice, this is not the one to look at. But if you are just looking to crunch up ice cubes or like to munch on ice, I think this may be the way to go. After seeing what it takes to crunch up the large ice cubes that I feed it, I'm really glad I did not go with a cheaper flimsier manual unit. After a month of use to get it broken in I believe I can share my brief experience with this filter. First off, installation was really easy. Less than 30 minutes (don't forget to 'flush' it for five minutes). The water I had previously smelled and tasted like pool water. I have a Frigidaire frig that didn't come with and ice maker. I really didn't need one for awhile because I needed the extra freezer space. Nearly two years ago I purchased and began using my NewAir AI100BK Portable Icemaker. For two years it faithfully supported my frappe habit, saving me countless amounts of money by bringing me ice for my Mr. Coffee BVMC-FM1 20-Ounce Frappe Maker. I was happy.

However all good things (and electrical products) come to an end, and after nursing it along for three months, it quietly died. I grieved and then moved on.

I chose the Polar because it opens in the front, fitting under my counters better, and actually holds about the same amount of ice. The drain for the water is underneath, allowing an easy way to empty it. It makes ice just as fast as my previous one, if anything, while this is smaller, it seems to be even better insulated. The poles that freeze the water are inside where they can't be touched by children.

The guidelines state that you should clean it (bleach in water) regularly, and give instructions on saving your ice once the basket is full. It also recommends emptying it if you aren't using the ice. Since I let my previous maker run continuously, with the ice melting into the bottom and being remade, not only is this a better choice for health, but it will likely prolong the use.

To fill this ice maker you remove the drawer and fill the bottom. It comes with a pitcher which makes it easy to do, it also includes a scoop for the ice. You then plug it in and it makes ice ... Three choices of sizes. It doesn't state that you need to use any specific water, but the flavor of ice is dependent upon the water you use. When the drawer is full or the reservoir of water gets too low, a light comes on and it stops making ice. If the drawer is full (about 1/2 gallon of ice), put the ice in a ziplock bag and it will keep making ice. If you don't remove your ice it slowly melts back into the reservoir.

I thought parts were missing when mine first arrived, only to discover that the cord and pitcher were in the reservoir ... The scoop was in the drawer.

I have ice again. I am happy.

Edited - I have noticed that once my drawer is full, I need to push the stop and start button to get it to start making ice again. If I don't, it takes awhile to reset. I have also noticed that this particular model is more efficient when it makes the cubes, so I now keep my setting on medium cubes.

The other model began to immediately make ice once it fell below a certain level, so that it always had ice. This particular model focuses on making ice to be frozen. As a result, if I want guaranteed ice at any given moment in time, I need to empty it into the bags and freezer. I started out buying two of these after reading the reviews challenging the durability of this ice tray. Since I had a few extra bucks to get to the free supersaving shipping, I figured I might as well get two just in case I break one. I am glad that i bought two, but not because I broke one. I have found that if you just gently flex the ice cube trays, 95% of the ice cubes seem to come out quite easily. When it still has 2 or 3 that wouldn't move I hit the tray against the ice cube holder and they came out pretty easily. I don't know what these other guys were doing exactly when they broke them. I mean I could see how you can easily break these if you don't pay attention, but i was able to feel how much give the trays had in their flexibility. Maybe they just got stuck on getting one out that was particularly stubborn, but when that happens i simply left it and refilled with it in and it usually came out the second time. They are fairly thick trays and the lip around the top does a really good job of preventing any spills from the sink to the freezer. Anyways, as I mentioned earlier, I am glad I bought two. I am, frankly, shocked by the negative reviews of these wonderful little ice cube trays. Because of those comments, I only bought four previously but then also bought six of the blue Arrow ice cube trays for mini cubes--just in case.

The Arrow trays are wonderful, but the ice cubes they make, while small, are not SMALL ENOUGH for crunching unless you have steel jaws and have total disregard for your teeth. I love tiny ice cubes; but my automatic ice maker makes big old fashioned cubes, and I have ALWAYS hated it. I like the kind available in fountain drinks--but I could never find the way to make them at home, and ice crushers are noisy and messy.

These tiny cubes are perfect. The only possible objection I can see is clearly addressed in the instructions. YOU HAVE TO LET THE CUBE TRAY SIT for a minute or so after removing it from the freezer, or it WILL be hard to pop out the cubes.

But that's the only thing. I am buying six more of these right now. I have a small kitchenette with an under counter fridge/freezer near my room because I have a four-story house and I basically LIVE at the top of it; trekking downstairs endlessly to feed my ice crunching addiction, while good exercise, was also irritating to say the least! I think I will be able to stack ten of these trays on top of each other--even in my limited freezer space (one ice cube tray deep and about eight inches tall--could probably fit three more stacks of ten, but that is a tad over the top--even for me!).

Seriously, the mini cubes are just divine! I also have have three regular sized ice cube trays because, as cute as these minis are, they sure can go fast if you are making frozen drinks in a blender. For that, the Arrow minis are actually better since they are larger. This is a very good product for the price and would have earned a 5-star rating from me, but the crushed ice it produces is not really the right size for anything (at least not for what I wanted). The pieces are generally about quarter-inch thick and range from a quarter-inch to a half-inch in length -- not fine enough for "snow cone" type ice, yet too small to serve as crushed ice in a drink (the pieces melt quickly and water down the drink).

That said, the product itself is good. The unit is about 11 inches high and looks nice on the counter, the motor is quiet, I can crush six to eight crescent-shaped cubes at once in a matter of seconds, and there's no mess. Again, the only problem is the result.

Actually, this may work for "slushie" style drinks made from a concentrate (where one can reduce the amount of water added to allow for the crushed ice that's going to melt immediately). So if that's your intent...

The instruction booklet states that it will crush 14 oz. of ice per minute, and that seems accurate.

One other note: The instructions clearly advise turning the motor on, letting it run a few seconds, then pushing cubes one at a time through a trap-door metal inlet on top. However, if that metal door doesn't spring shut fast enough, the ice cube will hit the spinning crusher mechanism and shoot right back up at you. A better/safer approach would seem to be dropping several cubes in through the inlet door first, then turning the motor on to crush them. This is nice, I'm glad I got it~~~BUT~~~the reviews on other sites were GROSSLY misleading, stating that there were ice cubes in 10 minutes!!!! Well, yes, there was, all TWO of them. To fill the basket up inside takes the better part of AN HOUR!!! That said, the ice is clean, not funny tasting and after the first run, the operation is quiet and efficient. Way easier than trying to get ice out of my freezer and way cheaper than buying ice~~~well, after the first 100 bags or so~~~;~)) I like this little item. I even put my microwave on top of the fridge, so this could live on the countertop next to the sink and coffee pot.
